How a Tea Product Gets Made
Custom quote
For entrepreneurs and business owners, CEOs and senior executives, and executive peer groups.
A talk with time for questions. I go through products I've developed at DAVIDsTEA and with BDH clients, and what went right or wrong with suppliers, co-packers, and product briefs. Bring questions about your own products.
- What you're paying for in a supplier quote, from volume pricing to supply stability and deferred costs
- What you need from a co-packer or tea blender to make an informed decision
- How to write an effective beverage product brief

Blend Your Own Tea
Custom quote
For executive peer groups, spouses and partners, and general corporate audiences.
A hands-on session of at least two hours. Each table gets base teas, botanicals, and flavorings, supplied at no extra cost by a sponsoring tea company, and I walk the group through how I developed blends at DAVIDsTEA. Everyone tastes, adjusts, and leaves with a blend of their own.
- A tea blend they made themselves, packed to take home
- How to taste tea for aroma, body, and finish
- How to balance a base tea with botanicals and flavorings

Steeped in Myth: Everything You Think You Know About Tea Is Wrong
Custom quote
For executive peer groups, spouses and partners, and general corporate audiences.
A talk for curious audiences, with a tasting if the venue allows. I take three things most people believe about tea and show what's true, using what I've seen inside the industry.
- What tea is, and why most herbal teas aren't tea
- Why a teabag and loose leaf can come off the same production line
- Why the caffeine ranking of black, green, and white tea doesn't hold up

About Billy
I've worked in tea for about twenty years. I started at fifteen, graduated from the Specialty Tea Institute at seventeen, and later taught there. I spent close to a decade running R&D and sourcing at DAVIDsTEA, and I wrote Spill the Tea, a book on blended and flavored teas. Today I run BDH Consultants with my business partner Don Ho. We help tea and beverage companies with sourcing and product development, mostly the unglamorous parts like supplier vetting and co-packer briefs. I also write Steep Insights, a newsletter about the tea business.
